The Night Sky

About the time I was finishing up Annie's Sun, we got word that her twin sister, Amy, who we also worked with, had passed away as well. Amy was a sweetheart. She wasn't as social as Annie, but she always had a kind word, and if you could find your way to her inner circle, she was so much fun.
Annie might have been the sun, with shades of yellows and oranges, but Amy loved her hot pink. She had a hot pink purse, coat, and computer bag. So when planning a rug as a memorial for Amy, I knew I wanted it to pair with the sun, and it had to have hot pink in it.
I decided to match the sun, I'd do a night sky, with constellations representing the zodiac signs under which both Annie and Amy passed, as well as the sign they shared, since they were twins. I found it highly appropriate that Amy passed under the sign of Gemini- the twins. So I traced the same shape for the moon as I did the sun, but flipped it upside down, so the moon was at the top.
I struggled with how to use the pink. I hand-dyed the sky on Dorr Mill's Silver Sparkle, the pink, and the gray. I tried yellow and white both to connect the stars. I finally decided it made sense to use the pink. Around the time I was finishing the hooking, I took an embellishments course. One of the ideas was to use beads. I felt like that was a great way to accent my stars, so I sewed crystal beads into the stars, for an extra sparkle.
And I happened upon a discussion about how to highlight the moon in the sky with a row of white or light color around it, and I was pretty happy with the way it all turned out.

Once I got this one finished, I was able to hang them on the wall next to each other in my office.

We'll see if I'm back in my office on a regular enough basis to keep my office. But if not, I may try to find a way to keep them in the office, or maybe get high quality photographs done of both of them, and donating the photos to the office.
