Locker Hooking

So it's been a while. The past year has been full of change and unknowns. And I haven't done much, if any hooking since around this time last year.

But, on a whim this week I decided to learn about and try locker hooking. It feels like a combination of rug hooking, crochet, and sewing. It can use all sorts of materials. Including plastic bags. Mine was simple. Wool yarn, thinner cotton yarn, rug canvas (like you use for latch hooking), ribbon (leftover from Christmas bags), scissors, a tapestry needle, and a locker hooking needle.

It was kind of like crocheting into a foundation. Sometimes pulling up loops was more like traditional rug hooking, but most of the time it felt loose enough to be more like loose crochet. Then it resembled pushing a needle through several stitches at a time.

A few changes I would make if I did this project again:

  1. I would use the smaller weave foundation with the yarn. The 3.75 was ok, but the yarn doesn't quite fill in completely.

  2. I would have planned my pattern better and made it 16 rows by 16 columns. This was 15x15, so my last black row didn't make it.

  3. I would have left longer tails to weave in on the top.

But, on the whole, for a new craft, it went well. About 2 hours from start to finish. I will likely try a few more projects. I just have to plan them out at the right scale.

And the back even came our pretty clean.

Hopefully a new project will come soon.
